Our client, one of California’s most esteemed probate firms, is seeking an experienced Director of Accounting (Controller) to join its Los Angeles office. As one of the largest firms in the state specializing exclusively in probate litigation and administration, the firm’s attorneys are recognized thought leaders, handling some of the most high-profile estates in the region. The firm’s success is deeply rooted in the dedication and expertise of its professional staff, who provide invaluable support to both clients and attorneys alike.

The Director of Accounting will play a pivotal role in overseeing the firm’s financial operations, ensuring the highest standards of accuracy and integrity. Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing A/P, A/R, billing, and payroll functions.
  • Managing accounting transactions and records to the general ledger, including month-end account reconciliations and the preparation of monthly financial statements.
  • Preparing month-end journal entries and reviewing general ledger details.
  • Performing monthly trust account reconciliations.
  • Preparing the firm’s annual budget, including revenue forecasts, and assisting department heads in budget completion.
  • Managing all aspects of financial reporting, including profitability analysis at both the firm and individual timekeeper levels, compensation, rate determination, and other reports requested by firm management.
  • Approving and releasing weekly payments, checks, and wires.
  • Creating and updating process documentation and overseeing third-party vendor 1099 reporting.
  • Collaborating with the firm’s CPA on maintaining fixed asset records and assisting with tax-related matters.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, with a CPA license or MBA being preferred. A minimum of 5-7 years of general accounting experience within a law firm or professional services firm is required, along with at least 5 years of management experience overseeing multiple direct reports.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $150,737.00 – $160,214.00 per year
